Mighty Networks vs a custom platform: renting a great house is still renting

Mighty Networks gives hosts real data ownership and strong tools, but you're still living in a house someone else designed.

Mighty Networks is a genuinely good place to build a community, and it's more generous about your data than most platforms. But a great rental is still a rental. You can paint the walls. You can't move them.

That's not a knock. Plenty of people should rent. Here's how to tell if you're one of them.

What Mighty Networks does well

Mighty calls itself "the community platform that delivers," with community, courses and events at the core. The focus is members meeting each other, not just consuming content.

Credit where it's due on data. Mighty's own help docs say: "You maintain full ownership of all content, member data, and activity within your Mighty Network." On the Launch plan and up, hosts can download member lists as Excel files, with details like join dates, last visits, Space memberships, tags, badges and course completion.

Mighty Insights goes further than most analytics. Alongside network totals, it ranks hosts, moderators and members by an Engagement Score built from things like posts, comments, RSVPs, votes, messages and reactions.

Branding goes beyond a logo: colors, up to five fonts, custom role names and a look for each Space. With Mighty Pro, you get native iOS and Android apps under your own name in the App Store and Google Play, which Mighty says can be live within four to six weeks.

Who it's best for: hosts who want a strong member to member community with courses and events, real access to their data, and a polished platform they don't have to build or maintain.

Where a growing community starts to feel the limits

The floor plan is Mighty's

Every Mighty Network is assembled from the same kit: Spaces with feeds, events, courses and chat. Each Space can look different, and that flexibility is real.

But the journey is still built from parts every other host has. If your program depends on members taking very different paths, you'll be working around the floor plan instead of with it.

Their roadmap, their pricing

As of November 2026, Mighty's pricing page lists Launch at $79 a month ($950 a year), Scale at $179 a month and Growth at $354 a month. Mighty Pro, which includes your own branded apps, is priced by quote.

Mighty also takes a transaction fee on sales: 2% on Launch, 1% on Scale and 0.5% on Growth and Mighty Pro. Stripe's processing fees come on top. Purchases made in the iOS app skip Stripe's fee but carry Apple's, which Mighty lists as 15%.

Some tools, like APIs and third party integrations, start at Scale.

Mighty Pro comes with a nice perk: new features show up in your apps automatically. That's also the tradeoff. Your app gets what Mighty builds, when Mighty builds it.

What data you can see and take with you

This is where Mighty shines. The limits are small: Mighty Insights runs only on desktop web and on paid plans, and its numbers update on a 24 hour delay.

But notice what the ownership covers: your content and your member data. The software itself is something you subscribe to. When you own your data but rent the experience, moving means rebuilding the house your members know.

Brand control

Mighty's branding tools are generous, and on Launch and up you can personalize your welcome and daily digest emails too. Your own app, though, is a Mighty Pro conversation. Mighty's own site frames Mighty Pro as the way to put your name in the App Store.

What a custom platform changes

Owning means you can move the walls.

At TNRM, we start with your people, then your process, and only then the platform. We dig into your business, map workflows, roles and outcomes, and design around how your members actually behave, with security built in from the start. If you're coming from another platform, bringing your community over is an add on.

What changes:

  • The floor plan is yours. The experience is designed around your members and personalized from day one. At DarkWork, the coaching platform we built for Anthony Trucks, a concierge greets new members and an access code sets their tier.
  • Each role sees only its own rooms. Members, coaches, staff and the owner each get a walled off view, with strict privacy and security on every layer.
  • Insight tied to your outcomes. Behavioral insights pay attention to what matters in your program: did they show up, finish the step, go quiet? They stay off until a member opts in, and only the owner sees them. The point is simple: notice when someone needs you before they disappear.
  • Virtual teammates, with you in charge. They can handle welcomes, check ins, follow ups and an owner brief. Anything that sends, posts, pays or touches a member waits for your OK, and members always know when they're talking with a helper.
  • One system, fully yours. Marketing, email, billing, your own app, onboarding, support, video, community and coaching can all live in one place. The platform, the code and the data belong to you, and we can run it for you if you'd like.

We bring the same approach to Honest Builder, an expert supported community for the trades, and SpeakerGym, a communication training platform.

Here's the feeling part. Renting is comfortable until your family grows and you want to knock down a wall. Then every idea starts with "am I allowed?" Owning swaps that question for a better one: "what do my people need?"

Who should stay on Mighty Networks

A lot of hosts, honestly.

Stay if Mighty's structure already fits your program. Stay if its data access and Insights tell you what you need to know. Stay if you want a polished app without owning the upkeep, and Mighty Pro fits your budget.

A custom build asks more of you up front: time, clarity and a real picture of your people. Renting a great house is a smart move while you figure out how you want to live.

Look at owning when you keep hitting the same walls, when your members need paths the floor plan can't hold, and when you want your brand, your experience and your code to be fully yours.
